Bimini Bay Environmental Preservation By Bimini Bay Resort

OVERVIEW

Bimini Bay Resort and Marina is located on the island of North Bimini in the Bahamas. The world-class destination includes condominium accommodations, fine-dining restaurants, marinas, a shopping plaza, a state-of-the-art spa and other amenities. ENVIRONMENT

The natural allure of the island is one of Bimini’s greatest assets, and the developer of Bimini Bay Resort has designed the project to have minimal environmental impact during construction and ongoing operations. The full master plan was approved to commence development by the Bahamian government in 1998. In addition, Bimini Bay Resort took an additional step, spending in excess of $1 million on outside consultation from a variety of experts to ensure an environmentally sensitive development. Stringent BEST Management Practices have been implemented to protect the island and surrounding environment.

The Bahamas government and BEST Commission have made very strong efforts to ensure the island and environment are protected.

NAVIGABLE WATERS

Initial construction involved securing the shoreline around the bay to minimize storm impacts. These areas have been stabilized through a combination of retention systems to prevent erosion and sedimentation issues. The developer engages in strict BEST Managament Practices to ensure the bay bottom seagrass and other organisms are protected.

SHARK AND FISH HABITATS

Based on interviews with local fisherman, it is public knowledge that fish populations are more plentiful and thriving in the bay and surrounding areas of the island. There has also been an increase in local fishing tournaments held at Bimini Bay Resort, and larger numbers of fish have been caught compared to previous years. POTABLE WATER

The availability of potable water has always been an issue for Bimini, which has historically relied on barge shipments and rainwater cistern and water collections. Bimini Bay Resort and Marina has invested in a reverse osmosis plant that today not only supplies water for the development, but is also providing potable water to local residents and businesses, making the resort the water supplier for the entire island.
